text cut at bottom of page when printing
Hi,
I'm trying to print and every time some text get split between the bottom of one page an the top of the other. I'm using the swiss stylesheet, but this happens with all of them.
Is there any way to stop this happening

That's odd. I'll take a look at the print styling and see if there's something on my end that might be causing that. Does it happen when you print to PDF as well?

What kind of print margins do you have set up, and can you attach a Markdown file that this is happening on? I need to see if I can replicate before I'll be able to fix.

I don't set any printer margins as there are no options to do so in the printer dialogue. I just use the swiss stylesheet.
I've attached the document in question. I'm printing to a lexmark colour laser C540n

I'm attaching the PDF output I get on my end, which comes out as expected. There has to be a print setting hanging over from another app. Marked doesn't currently have a page setup dialog, so it uses any default settings you've created in other apps. Could you go into an app like TextEdit or Pages and see if there's any odd settings regarding page margins or page breaks?
Also, what operating system are you using, and are you on the latest version of Marked (1.1.3)?

I'm running:
OS X 10.7.2
Marked Version 1.3.1 (177)
My printer always prints from the default setting. In the printer dialogue there is no option to alter the margin. It allows the changing of the pages per sheet, whether to print a border or not, colour matching, which pages to print, which order to print them, and the ability to scale the page to a different size (this is not checked), which page to print from and if I want to print a cover sheet. There is nothing there that will allow me to change the margins or page break.
I do not use any bespoke setup. The settings are default as installed by Lexmark, I have not customised them in any way.
I do not have this print issue with any other programme. I've tried printing long documents in textmate, Multimarkdown Composer, Pages, Textedit. The only app that gives me split text is Marked.

I actually have the same problem (at times). Using US letter. Does not happen all the time to me, but about once every 10 pages.
I use a custom CSS, but I based it on the Antique CSS Marked provides and tweaked it a lithe.

This is very confusing, but I'm looking into it. Could both of you try exporting the HTML (with template) and opening the resulting file in Safari to print? I'm curious about whether it suffers from the same issue with your given setups.

Can you try it in Safari? Marked uses the same rendering engine as Safari, and I can't really replicate what Firefox does using webkit, so I need to know if you have the same issue in a Webkit browser (Chrome would offer a good indication as well, I think).

Did the test with Safari. No problems.
I tested a 24 page document. The difference between the Marked to PDF compared
to the Marked to HTML/Safari to PDF is pretty striking. After about 16 pages there's a difference of about 3 lines. So some sort of spacing, page break, is definitely different. Weird!
Okay, in the meantime I'll do HTML/Safari and then PDF as that results in a cleaner document.

I will continue to battle the webkit print process and do my best to provide more formatted output from both PDF options. In the meantime, it does look like export to Safari or printing from HTMLDoc (http://www.easysw.com/htmldoc/) if you have it is going to be the best solution.

Do either of you own Byword (bywordapp.com)? It uses the same printing system as Marked and I'd be curious to know if you have the same issues when exporting as PDF.

Tested the same document in byword. Exported the document from byword, opened it in Safari and printed to pdf. The attachements show where the problems are. Only found a problem in two places.
I should add that the same document opened in Firefox and printed to pdf has no problem at all.

Ok, so they do suffer from the same issues under your circumstances. Unfortunately I don't have access to the Firefox printing system from within Marked, so that's not an option. I'm pretty sure you'd get the same results printing directly from the Markdown preview in Byword as well. Like I said, I'll spend more time working on nothing but improving PDF export. Lots to fix :)

Let me ask this: how important is matching the preview styling when printing? In this case, an add on like htmldoc could be included and would allow for far more output control, page breaking and more. It doesn't take custom CSS, though, so the output could only be controlled by certain manually-set preferences.

One of my ongoing issues with (Multi)Markdown is getting the stylised text onto paper. I'm a public communicator and need notes. These notes need headings, bold, italic, lists, and occasionally tables. That's about it.

hmmm . . . . I love the custom CSS. But presumably I could
do the "regular" routine (export to Safari, print to PDF from there) if you
made this change. In that case, adding htmldoc would be of great benefit.
I'd lose some custom styling at times, but I need good printing controls
at others.
I think the biggest thing, if non-custom CSS could only be used, is to have
at least 1 serif printing option and at least 1 sans-serif printing option.

Thomas, I hope so. I haven't been able to replicate this issue yet, but am still working on a revamp of the whole printing system that should cover this as well.

Just wanted to mention that (since v1.4) you can use the <!--BREAK--> syntax in your document to force a page break before a line that gets cut off. Obviously not an ideal solution, but as a temporary fix it will allow you to control the print layout a little more.
