easier to manage. I've seen this same crash a few times, on both
Snow Leopard and Lion. I haven't been able to replicate it at all.
I made some changes in the code for the next version that
might help, but more information would be very useful.

Could you attach any text file that Marked is crashing on? Also,
let me know where the file is stored (Dropbox, main HD, external
disk, etc.).

Bretttag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T17:48:10Z2021-03-17T15:07:09ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Brett:

Thanks for the quick reply. Please see attached Markdown file.

I also notice that if I put the horizontal rule markdown characters
("***" or "___") on their own line, they won't necessarily render correctly: I need to pad the characters with 1 line of spacing on
either side for them to render properly.

Thanks, David.

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T18:03:30Z2011-09-14T18:03:30ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Ok, I tested with your file and Byword and was able to edit
without crashing and updates kept up, so there's something going on
besides encoding issues or Byword incompatibilities.

I gather that you're not using any kind of custom processor. Are
the files you're editing stored on Dropbox or anything
external?

Also, do you mind if I make this conversation public so the
debugging might help someone else?

Bretttag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T18:18:00Z2011-09-14T18:18:00ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Oh, and by the way, Marked uses the MultiMarkdown 3
implementation, which does require whitespace on both sides of a
horizontal rule to work.

Bretttag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T19:03:08Z2021-03-17T15:07:09ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Brett:

Yes, the files are in Dropbox.

Yes, you may make this public if you think it will help others. Just didn't want to expose anything particularly private in the crash dump file. You can judge better than I can whether that info has private information.

Thanks, David

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T19:03:53Z2021-03-17T15:07:10ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

...and thanks for the tip on whitespace and horizontal line formatting in MM3.

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T19:06:18Z2011-09-14T19:06:18ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Deleting the crash reports and your sample file before switching
this to public.

I think there may be an issue with Marked and files on Dropbox.
I'll leave this ticket open while I do some further testing. If you
could try moving the files out of your Dropbox folder and testing
them for a while, it would be very helpful to know if the crashes
still occur. Thanks.

Bretttag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T19:11:00Z2021-03-17T15:07:10ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

For what it's worth, I did install the Byword.css stylesheet as a custom style.

I will move the file out of Dropbox and see what happens.

Thanks, David

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T19:55:05Z2021-03-17T15:07:10ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Brett:

I moved the file in question to my Documents directory, rebooted, and
edited, and the symptoms persist: the document won't update upon
Byword save and it intermittently crashes.

Oh, well.

David.

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T20:02:08Z2011-09-14T20:02:08ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Ok, leaving this ticket open while I review the crash report
some more. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Have you tested with any other editors? Same results?

Bretttag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-14T22:58:14Z2021-03-17T15:07:10ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

I will try with TextEdit and TextWrangler and get back to you.

Cheers, David

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-15T00:26:00Z2021-03-17T15:07:10ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Here's an update. I could not get it work with BBEdit. I could get it
to work with TextWrangler, but it would not update on save in the
editor: I had to go to Marked and hit Refresh.

In TextWrangler, I noticed that if I switched styles a few time, it
would no longer switch styles and it would no longer Refresh properly
with updates. I would have to close the Markdown file, reopen, and go.
Then after a few times of this close-and-reopen, Marked crashed. New
crash report attached.

In TextEdit, it seemed to work for a little bit, but then it got all
funky, too. I noticed in TextEdit that there were some funky
characters (non alpha). I deleted them, but it didn't help, other than
make the rendered document look correct. Had several crashes; reports
2 and 3 are from TextEdit.

Note: I have the Byword CSS file installed as the Custom style.

Is there any way to get back to the initial install state? Is there a
*.plist file that I can delete to start again?

For what it's worth, I see an "mds" process running furiously in the
background. Spotlight indexing?

Thanks, David.

dsmccormicktag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-15T00:32:56Z2011-09-15T00:32:56ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

I'll review the crash reports as quickly as possible. The

mds
process is of interest as it is Spotlight
indexing and could greatly affect Marked's performance in exactly
the areas we're looking at. A couple of thoughts:

To reset preferences, delete the file
~/Library/Preferences/com.brettterpstra.marky.plist

Rebuilding the Spotlight index for your primary drive has
helped several people. If you're willing to try this fix, you can
use a number of utilities such as Onyx or Cocktail, but the easiest
is just to open Terminal and type
mdutil -E /

I'll be back in touch soon.

Bretttag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-15T09:14:37Z2011-09-15T09:14:37ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Yep, for me, too: "mdutil -E /" did the trick. Strange.

Samueltag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-15T09:17:46Z2011-09-15T09:17:46ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Now, Spotlight indexes my *.md files and the auto-reload of a
.md file I am editing in ByWord is working in marked.

samueltag:support.markedapp.com,2011-09-11:Comment/99597142011-09-15T09:20:20Z2011-09-15T09:20:20ZMarked not updating from Byword and crashing repeatedly

Great! Apparently this is going to be my all-purpose
solution…

Brett
