Flashes on update

Hi,

Again thanks for a great program.

For some time Marked2 has been flashing on update. It is as if the Marked2 window gets black for a moment and then lightens up again. It has somewhat same effect as a broken fluorescent tube — quite distracting.

I may have caused it by altering some settings in the preference, but cannot make it go away. Can you help on this?

Thanks in advance,
Christian

Not sure what would causing this. Do you have MathJax enabled?

    No, no MathJax enabled.

I’ll do a fresh install and see if that solves it. How do I remove ‘old seettings’ in order to do such a fresh install?

    Thank you.

Resetting preferences depends on which version you have installed (Direct or Mac App Store). Let me know which you have and I'll show you how.

(Reinstalling the app will very likely have zero effect, resetting the preferences is far more effective for troubleshooting.)

I use the direct download version.

Thank you — did try to reinstall, but as you said, it did not change my prefs.

    All the best,
    Christian

    Ok:

To delete your preferences with the direct (non-MAS) version of Marked 2:

    1. Quit Marked 2
    2. Delete the file at ~/Library/Preferences/com.brettterpstra.marked2.plist (and any other files starting with com.brettterpstra.marked2). If you're not sure how to access this folder, open Finder and press ⌘⇧G, then paste "~/Library/Preferences" (without quotes) into the box.
    3. Reboot the computer (this is important as OS X aggressively caches preferences and may just restore the deleted file without your knowledge.
    4. Launch Marked 2

    Happy new year!

Thank you for the detailed instructions — very helpful!

Unfortunately it has not solved the issue with flashes. I’ve turned off the ’Scroll to first edit’ option, and this seems to decrease the number of flashes on screen updates. Can I change other options?

    All the best,
    Christian

Are you working on a machine with limited memory or processor speed at all? It's possible that you're seeing DOM repaints that on faster machines might be unnoticeable.

Thank you. DOM repaints — is there something I can do about them? My machine is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports).

First, that machine _shouldn't_ be having any trouble. And no, DOM
repaints are how the screen renders in a web view, assuming decent code
in the page, flashes are usually only an issue if memory is low.

This is something I've noticed, especially with dark mode enabled on Mojave. If the Marked2 style has a white background then on a DOM repaint with dark mode enabled the entire window flashes black briefly. With light mode on the DOM repaint just redraws the text without changing the background color.

Ah, this indicates that it's actually part of the refresh. In the moment
before it begins the rendering it's showing the background of the window
itself. Marked does a full refresh when updating its content (for
various reasons) and I'm not sure that this flash is something I can
avoid. For the record, it doesn't seem to be an issue on any of the
machines I have available for testing, so I'm not exactly sure what
    causes it.

Does this happen more often with longer or shorter documents or any
other variables that might shed more light on the cause?
