Word count is updating fine for me on standard documents. Could you
attach an example document that displays the issue for me to test?

I tried to do some more exploration this morning. It's a bunch of files (each chapter in a different one) and ideally I don't really want to send them. I did figure out that one of the files (the epilogue) seems to be causing issues. I made a video so you can see the word count jumping by about 5k by removing a file with 4 words.

If you open just epilogue directly and edit it, does the word count
    reflect the changes?

Yes, but, it stays down at 46xxx

I should add - when I add any text to chapter 11, the word count doesn't change. It's like I have some sequence of text or something that is tripping up the word count. But that seems odd... Are you calculating it by just splitting on spaces and removing new lines?

And going down that path. I think I found the problem...

You can't have a single < that doesn't have a closing one. In chapter 11 I have the line

But I forgot the closing >. If I add it, it all works like normal. But this seems like a bad thing for the word count to trip up on, because if you were writing any math in the document, it's very possible to have just a single > or <.

It views it as an HTML tag, which, by necessity, is excluded from the word count. Malformed HTML is difficult to account for, even when it's not intended to be HTML :).
